The error messages can be found in:
/etc/X11/Xorg.0.log

Today I found out the ati monitor and card that had caused so much trouble 
had a falling out.  The monitor is dead and I can easily take it to a 
place where it can be donated for recycling and the monitor was replaced 
with a Gateway EV910 which was originally manufactured by Sony.  I haven't 
yet tried this one with debian that's for later in the week.
