Since the only keys available for mapping are written in terms of Baum
devices, how to I map keys to my display? Based on the definitions
currently in the table and the behavior of my display, one end
of my advance bar will be a shift key. Of course, this doesn't work.

I've tried, but see above for why I can't make it work. I know the
brlapi driver is sending key codes to gnopernicus because I get errors
in my .xsession file when I press keys on the display, so how do I map them?

Thanks in advance.
