gnome starts, but no speech

Hi listers,

Well, I reverted to using a tarred version of gnome 2.4 I had from another installation to get gnome 2.4 up and running on my redhat enterprise advanced server 3.

I untarred the setup into /opt/gnome-2.4, modified my environment to point to it and tried startx.

The results... nothing is spoken. it did work on the earlier installation, so I know it is my setup somehow.

I saved the output from startx into a log file and it looks like this:

xinit:  connection to X server lost.
My .orbitrc file looks like this:
ORBIIOPUNIX=1
ORBIIOPIPv4=1

And before you ask, yes I did enable accessibility using the following script:
#!/bin/bash
gconftool-2 --type bool --set /desktop/gnome/interface/accessibility true
gconftool-2 --type bool --set /apps/gnopernicus/srcore/br_active true
gconftool-2 --type string --set /apps/gnopernicus/braille/device BRLTTY
gconftool-2 --type string --set /apps/gnopernicus/braille/translation_table en_US
gconftool-2 --type bool --set /apps/gnopernicus/srcore/sp_active true

any thoughts would be appreciated.
