Stopping X-Server

Hello,

When I try to start Gnome with startx I get the message that it is unable 
to establish any listeners, be sure that no X server is running. My 
machine also slows down  and behaves erratically even in other virtual 
consoles. How do i stop the X server? Reboot is the last resort. This ai't 
Windows!
