Alternatively, update to the latest cvs speakup and modularize the synth 
drivers. There's new code in there that, when the module is removed, gives 
the keypad back to the kernel. I personally found this easier than 
reboot/boot/reboot. After all that's one of the things i hate about that 
other os.
