I'm also running alsa and have the same unfavorable results with viavoice.
If we had the viavoice sources we could probably fix the problem by
comopiling with the alsa's oss emulation library. I'm using an onboard
sound chip which does not have an oss driver which means that viavoice is
not an option for me. Maybe this is one of the reasons IBM took viavoice
out of general circulation.
