ythreads system not yet initialized

Hi all
Can someone tell me what this error from gnome 2.3 means?
GLib-ERROR **: The thread system is not yet initialized.
aborting...
After this, gnome pauses then continues to load. However, many 
keyboard functions do not work.
This only happens with the accessibility key enabled as a non-root user. 
When using gnome as root, this error does not occur. So what does this 
mean and what permissions are set wrong?
This is gnome-2.3 compiled from cvs using jhbuild.
