X-windows actually runs in a different console other than the one where you typed startx, usually console 7 on myst 
systems.  Switching to the save console where you typed startx results in a text console containing status messages from 
the X server and applications which can be used for debugging and other informational purposes.

effect on non-Linux systems, especially when done by a privileged user.
