Access implications of SVG in Gnome

In a recent article on it was pointed out that SVG
support had just been integrated into Gnome by the developers for
the representation of icons and user interface components. The
access-related advantages of SVG are documented at

The most obvious potential benefit is that labels and other
descriptive information could be embedded in the SVG image, using DESC
elements for example, and exposed via Gnome SVG support to the
accessibility API. If there is value in doing this, the necessary
support would have to be included in the SVG processing library and
the implementation of the accessibility API. More interesting
advantages of SVG derive from the group element, the inclusion of
metadata in the SVG content, and the combination of SVG with other
languages such as XHTML.
