Re: Gnopernicus 0.7.0 does not want to init my brl display

Hi Rich, Chris,

I'm wondering the same thing. How can we change the way Gnopernicus renders
information either in speech or braille? Its somewhere in the config
settings, but the UI I found to change some of these rules for how to
pronounce different UI items is itself hard to use because of the way the
rules are setup. So, is there a text-based way of changing these settings,
and some documentation on how to do it?

Thanx in advance...

Chris - which Braille display are you using? I don't think BAUM owns all of the displays they support (especially since the BrlTTY work). Also, what are the Braille command settings in the Preferences->Braille Preferences->Braille Key Mapping dialog (the Braille Keys tab)? Gnopernicus version 0.71 defines these Braille keys as "DKxx". You can map these to whatever Gnopernicus command you want. See if that fixes things for you.

Both Rich and Chris - the presentation output changes you want to make can be found in the Preferences->Presentation dialog. This is currently a very difficult dialog to use, and as a result of feedback from folks Sun brought into our Usability Labs BAUM is in the middle of redesigning these dialogs. For now, you need to arrow down through the table to find the line containing the combination of [output device, role, event] and modify the presentation string (in the "chunk" column) to make the output be what you want. Note also that in addition to the dialog changes that are in process, BAUM is changing the syntax of the output "chunk", moving to XML. Finally, while these strings are stored in gconf for now, they will be moving to their own XML file which gets read at startup time.

So, the basic answer is that you can change things now, and hopefully soon (before GNOME 2.6.0) it will be much easier to change them!

Hi Tom,

Many thanks for your reply. I finally did it and it nearly works. The only
problem which remains is that since my braille display is quite short, (32
cells only), it only shows me the beginning of a chunk and I don't know how
to display the end. When I perform a CmtFWinRt command, it directly goes to
next item and I did not figure out how to change this behaviour yet. It is
especially annoying while getting long edit fields or checkboxes with long
descriptions since the check mark is presented at the end.

So, if anyone knows how to configure gnopernicus in order to display the
entirety of each item on a short braille display, I would appreciate any
hint.

Many thanks to all those who helped me to have braille support. Have a nice
day. Chris

Hi, Delaunay.
There is a known bug with gnopernicus 0.7.0 which ships with Drake where the
braille support is broken. You must download 0.7.1 from gnome.org and
rebuild ggnopernicus from that in order to get braille support.
