Great - you should have the same problem with (eg.) xclock; ultimately
you need to have your DISPLAY environment variable setup to point at the
right display.
This is because an X application can run on remote computers, multiple
displays on the same machine, nested Xservers etc. and it needs to know
which one.
As Bill says export DISPLAY=":0.0" will prolly fix this for you just
fine [ also before running gnome-session this would be most useful ].
