user levels

I should mention that user levels are really Andy Hertzfeld's pride and
joy. The others of us who worked on the user level feature thought of it
more as an experiment. Although I think the results were pretty good, I
would be comfortable replacing it with another solution to progressive
disclosure of preferences.
On the other hand, I haven't heard another specific solution yet. Jim's
suggestion that we use disclosure triangles as they are used on Macintosh
is not yet clear to me. It might be a good approach, but I can't work out
the details in my head. For example, specifically where would the
disclosure triangles go?
It would be a lot of work to reorganize the preferences in Nautilus, but I
don't have any theoretical objections to doing it for GNOME 2.
