If you want some feature creep, anyone reading text files will have to
implement the equivalent of the GIOChannel on-the-fly codeset
conversion stuff that Ron recently put in GLib.

Perhaps you could implement this quickly be creating an IO channel
subclass (parallel to windows, unix ones) and then calling the
GIOChannel streaming codeset conversion code on that. You could keep
all the GIOChannel stuff in private files if appropriate.
