XMPS (http://xmps.sourceforge.net). The most recent release of XMPS
(0.2.0) reveals that the project has grown immensely both in features
and maturity (the latter being the most important). It now provides a
fairly stable high quality media player for GNOME that handles MPEG,
MP3, FLI, DivX (e.g. MPEG-4, or what all the Windows Media Files are)
using the recently released OpenDivX and a few other formats. The player
is fairly GNOME savvy and has an appealing interface. The CVS tree has
the makings of a bonobo control, though it doesn't appear in the 0.2.0
release. They've gone through a long development cycle between 0.1.3 and
the current release, and it now appears ready for more general use. I
have been particularly impressed with the DivX CODEC.

Having a Media player is an important part of many people's computing
environment. A number of people appear to keep Windows on their system
primarily for playing movies. Additionally, its something that has
traditionally been packaged with "desktop environments" such as Windows,
MacOS, and KDE.
