I believe a new xalf is out already.  The problem was two fold,

1) LD_PRELOAD was being unset very conservatively, so it could sometimes
creap into processes it had no bussiness being in.  It should really never
be set in your terminal session.
2) it was not set with path

#1 I sent a patch to the xalf guy and I suppose it's been included (though
haven't checked)

#2 is the mandrake fix.
