Just to see what would happen, I copied config.sub from
/usr/share/automake-1.8 and ran configure.
Configure did not error out, and make did not error out, but a 'make
check' failed 2 of the tests, and the result/expect strings showed that
the result was all zeros, while the expected was some string.
