Build - .configure error with intltool

I'm trying to build glom from source on xubuntu 15.10.

I'm getting the following error in configure :-

    ...
    ...
    checking how to hardcode library paths into programs... immediate
    checking for po_xerror_handler... checking for struct po_xerror_handler.xerror... yes
    yes
    checking whether NLS is requested... yes
    ./configure: line 16202: intltool-update: command not found
    checking for intltool >= 0.35...  found
    configure: error: Your intltool is too old.  You need intltool 0.35 or later.


However my intltool is version 0.35:-

    chris esprimo$ dpkg -l | grep intltool
    ii  intltool-debian                               0.35.0+20060710.2 all          Help i18n of RFC822 
compliant config files


What am I doing wrong?
