It looks like it might be memory corruption, which is often difficult to
track down.
Actually I think I've seen this problem before:

Noone ever managed to track it down, and we don't officially support
GNOME 1.x now, so it was forgotten.
I'd still be interested to know what the problem is, if people can track
it down.
