I think, in general terms - and this is not just limited to the auto-focus
question - what gimp lacks is a simple guide to the basics.
I too have been put off using it except for a handful of tasks by this lack
of an 'over-view' of how to accomplish tasks.
For focussing however, I use Digikam and and the accompanying
Showfoto>Enhance>Sharpen - job done!
:-)

I find the complete lack of some general auto-sharpen, auto-focus image

It's all possible. Someone needs to either write entirely new code or
port existing solutions like the refocus-it plug-in to support the
latest GIMP tech properly. _And_ then maintain it. We don't have the
resources to do that currently.
P.S. I'm not sure why you are so hell-bent on insulting the very
people that you expect to do something for your own benefit. This is
not what people do in a healthy community. Perhaps you could consider
taking this rhetorics down a notch?
