Re: [Gimp-user] Color map is different than Color palette ? (graphics editor basics question)

Would I be correct in saying that a colour (Canadian and British spelling) "Palette" is what you have to choose from, that is, like a real palette it's what paint you have "in your hand" (à portée de main) so to speak.

Whereas in computer speak a colour "Map" is what's already in a given image.

A palette in GIMP terms is what you paint *from* to make an image, a map is *what's already there* in the finished image. When you are painting, you have millions of colors to choose from, but a finished image has a finite number of colours (its "map").

Yes, non?

A palette is a set of colours, which in GIMP can be given a name and
saved and edited and so on.

When an image is in indexed mode, it has an associated colourmap that
says, for example, a pixel with value "6" is really rgb(0.1, 0.9, 0.2).

A palette, if it's the right size (the right number of entries) can be
used as a colourmap, but the two concepts are slightly different.

There's a dock (a dialogue box) that lists lots of palettes and users
can add to them, edie them, delete them. So if you're doing an anime
style illustration in "flat" mode, you might have a dozen colours
you're switching between, and you can keep them all in a palette.

I don't know the context for the above, these are just strings from
the .po file, labeled as "context-action".

In some GIMP translations (e.g. French) the color map is sometimes
translated as color palette (e.g. Colormap Menu > Menu de la palette)
and that confuses me.
