The right tool for this is the Paths tool - (the pen, just past the
scissors ont he toolbox). It connects a curve with with straigh ines,
as you go clicking, and when you close a curve segment (holding
control and clicking back where you started), you can d o
select->from path to get a selection.
This is what I do:
Use "Paths Tool" -> Check the option "Polygonal" -> Start clicking on your
image. -> the last click can be as close as you can to the starting point or
just leave the last straight line (the next step will close the loop for you)->
once you are done : click "Selection from Path"
This will automatically connect the end to the start point and select for you.
Once you see the selection, you should be able to select other tools for your
own use.
