You can also use exiftool to add to the EXIF data:
exiftool -artist="Phil Harvey" -copyright="2011 Phil Harvey" a.jpg
Not a fan of commandline any more. I'm surprised there isnt a plugin, or better
yet, a GIMP default itself, to do this.
