[Gimp-user] Can't Open Existing Images

Just downloaded the latest version of Gimp - I'm running Win 10/64.
Gimp opens OK to create new images, but every time that I try to open an
existing image, the programme just hangs.
I'm clearly missing something fundamental here - could somebody please tell me
what?
