As others have said, convert works well, but for jpeg images you can use jpegoptim afterwards (and for png,
pngcrush) to get further improvements.
Save the originals, and run e.g. "identify" before and after to make sure that jpegoptim hasn't corrupted the
image -- very rarely, I find, it does.
