I honestly don't remember that, Partha, so you have my apologies.  I 
would not have taken you up on the offer, as I'd never used GIMP before, 
and honestly don't have the time to be a tester.

But, the problem turned out not to be Gimp, but X11 that was the 
problem.  Once that was fixed, it has worked fine since.
