Re: [Gimp-user] colour negative orange cast

Hello,

I am also interested for suggestions on developing color negatives in GIMP.
What I have tried so far is reversing the colors by means of Curces Tool. I
just reversed the values for the shadows (to top) and the highlights (to
bottom) Thus the colors were reversed. Then I used the white pipette for
whitepoint from Levels (or the gray one) to handle some color cast. It
should also work with Colors > Automatic > Whitebalance.

The previous two threads didn't go to the list, clicked 'Reply'
instead

Try configuring 'librsvg' without 'gobject-introspection':
./configure --prefix=/opt/gimp-2.8/ --enable-introspection=no



And yes, I tried compiling 'gobject-introspection-1.33.3.tar.xz' and 
'librsvg-2.36.1' fails to detect it, so for now disable it and give  
it a try.


Okay, we have success with svg image loading.

One last thing and it's probably trivial for everyone here but me.
The GTK themes aren't taking.  When run from the command line, I get
this:

(gimp:26437): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in
module_path: "clearlooks",
Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "pk-gtk-module"
Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"

What do I need to do to resolve that?   It's usable, but it doesn't
use the colors and stuff that other windows use.





Does CentOS use yum?

What does # yum search canberra
or
# yum search clearlooks

output?

The @ in the 3rd column indicates it's installed.  Clearlooks seems to 
be coming from my home directory... I think...

But since I installed everything in /opt/gimp-2.8, should I also need to 
put canberra in there as well?  I have a boat-load of conflicting 
libraries in there...  (Sure would be nice to be able to package ALL of 
that stuff into a single RPM and just call it 
"gimp-2.8.0-0-retrofit.x86_64.rpm")

Metadata is, almost by definition, non-essential to the layer and pixel
composition of an image; so the fact GIMP ignores it during load only
makes a difference if you need to write said composition back to a TIFF
file with original metadata preserved.  (Which is, of course, little
consolation if your particular workflow relies on this.)



Agreed, which is why my argument is that "file -> open" means to open a
GIMP project file, i.e. xcf.  Using other file formats would require a
"file -> import" action, which implies that the file is being converted
to GIMP's project format and of course may result in loss of data that
GIMP doesn't import.  This would be completely analogous to save/export.
This is the behavior I am familiar with in various 3d design software:
importers, exporters, and renderers for the native project format.

Where can I get GIMP 2.6 for win64? Sorry, I am just not getting along

with 2.8, specifically, no GAP. I cannot seem to get it to work. Also, the
2.8 interface on windows looks horrid (imho) looks like windows 2000 and I
have 7. Yeah, I use windows. I tried Ubuntu, but it just started getting
buggy after 10.4. And I could never get jack to work properly. 


Anyway, GIMP 2.6!

Sorry for the ugly URL but that's the way copy and paste came out.  I used

to install this version a lot on different machines because it was
conveniently both 32 and 64 bit installing.


Sorry for your experiences with the Linux versions... I have been having

trials and issues of my own lately.  There are times and moments in the
community when different parties seem to lose their way or their view of the
big picture.  And really, it's hard to say who is "right" (and by
elimination, who is wrong) in different areas because progress and stability
are often mutually exclusive.


When Unity was added to Ubuntu, that is where it went south, IMO. It is too
hit or miss now. At one time I boasted its potential, and to a degree I
still do, but as a serious replacement for Windows, they have a long way to
go. There should be some standard that all the developers have to follow.
The last I used it was just after the new LTS release. I tried to put Linux
MMMS on it, but got caught in this download hell that the program was trying
to rectify a dependency that was no longer available and after snooping
around, I figured how to stop it and install it. But it just started
crashing. 

Anyway, thanks for the link! Now I can get some work done!

As of poppler, GIMP requires 'poppler-glib >= 0.12.4' 
I used the packages in my repository:
libpoppler-dev
libpoppler-glib-dev



both of them version '0.12.4'
try those packages and if any error occurs, please report them back...

I also have poppler-glib 0.12.4 which comes with my distro.  However, the
compiler doesn't see it.  It's not the show-stopper that the SVG support
was.

My results have been close to satisfying but the performance and behavior
leads some things to be desired.  For example, when I was messing with the
text tool, I would highlight text, then go to the control to change
something about it and it would deselect the text.  Weird.  (Then again, I
wasn't using the "close to the object being edited" tool thing... when I
used that, it was good.)  But that leaves me wondering "was I supposed to
see the regular/original text tool?

I have some old fashioned colour negatives. I am trying to get positives
from these. Although I have searched the web it does not seem to be easy. I
have not understood most of what I've read. Can anyone tell me how to do it
using Gimp?

You need to use White Point color picker in the Levels tool to make
all orange white. If you upload an image that's safe to share with the
public, I'll give you a step by step tutorial.
