Hi!

oops, i actually sent that out by mistake, it was in my drafts folder!

it's a bit half-baked (and the font stuff has been goig better) but
what the heck, let's be radical :)

Ahah too bad, especially as it got stuck in wait list, so I could have deleted it before distribution if you had told me! 😛

By the way, the reason it got stuck was because the email address you initially sent it with was not subscribed to the ML.

I've wished for a long time gimp had the concept of projects -
* a set of related resources such as fonts, brushes
* tool settings and other presets
* default image folders for open/save/import/export
* possibly, ability to have multiple pejects open at the same time,
each with its own SWM with toolbox, but maybe that's too big a
change.

So this could add,
File->Project
  * New
  * Open
  * Save
  * Save As...

For me, a XCF was always close to an "image project" concept. It has never really been just an "image", which seemed to put it to the same type as various other image formats (export formats), such as PNG, JPEG or whatever. A XCF is more of a work-in-progress, with various pieces spread out (image or text layers, masks and channels, selection, vector data…). In other work: a project.

In particular, yes storing fonts, brushes, etc. is a nice idea (and I believe it has been discussed regularly accross the years) and I agree it would be nice to have. But rather than having a separate format, I would simply extend the XCF format to be able to embed these. Should we really need to have a new format, a new concept for this?

New would offer to take the current settings and make them into a
project.

Opening a project would load settings and resources (brushes, fonts,
palettes, etc) from the project folder.

File->import would import an image in any format into a project (xcf,
jpeg....) and of course file->export would work as now.

File->Project->save would save all open images in the project as well
as the project file.

Even having multiple images in a single XCF could eventually be a possibility. I have been playing with the idea when working on animated images. The similarity with multiple images (or multiple page project) is sometimes very close. When we will have proper animation support, having multi-page support as well would not be a problem at all either.

Jehan

File->Open would open project files by default, or xcf files, or
offer
to create a project containing the opened file

It would be possible to have multiple projects open at the same time.
Evantually, maybe, using an asset from one project in another project
might copy the asset automatically.
Eventualy, maybe each project would have its own tabbed single window
mode. Not sure.
