For HiDPI, I hear that GTK+3 will help (not sure of the details).
For the icons, should we just provide bigger icons (as in the forum 
thread you are pointing)? Is there no support of vectorial icons in GTK+ 
(2? 3?)? This would simplify a lot of things if icons could just be 
provided as vector images.
