Perhaps a food analogy might help you remember the difference between byte 
and bit.

If you aren't hungry you may just nibble a bit (bit) at your food but when 
you are hungry you will be take a bite (byte) of the food.

From that you should be able to visualize the difference that is smaller 
than a byte.
