Well, if you don't read warnings in this very list about
http://gui.gimp.org/index.php/Vision_briefing, it's your bad fortune
:)
It's been mentioned a thousand times that it's not just about making
mistakes while saving, that there's also such a thing as creating
complex images from scratch being the focus.

All i would ask for is that the "Save Image" Dialog will always default
to *.xcf, but still would provide some quick way to save (export) to
another format at choice. At the moment i often find myself (purely out
of habit, which isn't only Gimps "fault") in the position that i
actually wanted to save in another format. Now i have to close the
dialog and to open the export dialog. This seams a little bit
overcomplicated (throw away of time).
Don't get me wrong. I like the concept, but sometimes i want to go
against such concepts if they remove a certain degree of freedom. In
this case it doesn't make much sense to me to give the user not the
option to override the default. Either by adding the desired extension
or by pressing a button like "export instead of saving" inside the same
dialog.
