I'm adding an extra item to the list:
I also had several of reports about people choosing the file filter 
dropdown (in the export dialog) by mistake, thinking it was the format 
selector.

A label saying "show only:" or something like that could help.

Also the widget is too prominent and it drags your attention to it 
before the file format selector, which is usually more important than 
the file filter dropdown.
