I do it all the time but I usually add a space and an ampersand to avoid having my shell wait until I finish. 

Lately I have been getting an error message about connecting to an accessibility bus but it seems not to 
matter.

Try  the command
which gedit

to be sure the gedit shell tool is really installed and working.
