Re: [gedit-list] external tools plugin

Hey,

external tools has not been ported to win32. It is not possible to use it in this system.

Regards.

I'm interested in trying to use the "External Tools" plugin.
(By the way, I'm using gedit 2.30.1 on windows 7 (x64).

In the gedit help I found:

"To enable the External Tools plugin, select Edit ▸ Preferences ▸ Plugins ▸
External Tools."

However in the plugins tab, I see 24 different plugins I can enable, but
"External Tools" is nowhere to be found in this list. I see the following
two files inside my gedit folder:

\gedit\share\gedit-2\plugins\externaltools\ui\tools.ui
\gedit\share\gedit-2\plugins\externaltools\ui\outputpanel.ui

Aren't these files what tells gedit how to create this plugin? If so, why
can't I enable the plugin on m system?

Can I use the external tools plugin to create some simple keystroke macros?
Are the external tools created in python or in a gedit scripting language?
(My python programming skills are minimal).

And one final question ...
Is there any way to make the backup files go to a fixed folder of my choice
(i.e. not dependent on the folder where the source file is saved)? Ideally
the file name would have the same name as the original source file. The "~"
at the end would no longer be needed since there would be no name conflict
using the original file name (assuming one wasn't editing a file in the
fixed backup folder, which would be silly).

The reason I want this is that even though this backup feature is only one
revision deep, I find that it still allows me to recover from many silly
mistakes. However I find that it is too distracting to clutter up my many
source folders with these ~ files. Could such a backup scheme be programmed
with the "external tools" plugin?

Thanks
~Paul
