I think it was added in 2.28 (or maybe 2.26, I do not recall exactly ;)
The plugin searches possible matches in various places:
- the docs currently opened
- the docs in the current dir of the filebrowser plugin (if active)
- the recently used docs
- maybe somewhere else that I do not rememeber
