Thanks for replying. I'm familiar with devilspie but it seems an overkill (at least in my case) since I just want to fix the gedit window geometry (a standard feature in X applications).

Not very elegant but I use DevilsPie to handle window geometry for Gnome and several other apps.  My system has not been updated in a while so that might not be an option anymore..
