[gedit-list] set language

I do Tools/Set Language. In the resulting dialog I chose French and leave the dialog. If I do Tools/Set Language again it is still set to English. If I do Tools/Autocheck spelling on a French text it goes crazy and underlines everything.
I need to change between languages as I program in English but write texts in French.
I suppose I could create a batch file to change the language variable from en to fr, start Gedit, then when Gedit closes change it back to en, but it seems awkward somehow.
Please help me.
