[gedit-list] Any way to manipulate the file list in gedit?

I have a Symbol Browser plugin (http://symbol-browser.sourceforge.net).

What I want is a file list, just like the one that is already built into 
gedit, but above my symbol browser. Basically, I want that file list in 
a GtkVPaned in the same tab with my symbol browser. Is there any way to 
get that panel, remove it's widget, and add it to my panel?

That way, the top list would select an open file which would then 
populate the symbols for that file without having to tab back and forth.
