Re: [Geary] Geary marking new replies to a thread as read

Hello ... I've been watching for this behaviour (Geary marking a message as read when it has not been). Just now a reply came in to a thread. Geary was running but not the foreground application (Chromium was in the front) and also the computer had gone into lock screen / screen sleeping.

When I unlocked the screen and switched to Geary I saw that the thread in question was the selected/showing thread, but the NEW message was not visible on the screen. An earlier message in the thread was visible and I had to scroll down to see the new message which was already marked as read.

I noticed and checked this because I could see on my iPhone that the message summary of this thread was showing a preview of this new reply, but the iPhone (mail app) already showed it as read. Normally the iPhone mail app will leave a blue dot next to unread mail until you actually click on the message in question.

So, yes, would be nice if this could be improved in Geary somehow.

It happens when I have Geary open, possibly only when in the foreground or maybe any time, and I have a message thread selected and then the main window is showing collapsed versions of all the messages in the thread. If a new message comes in which belongs in that thread, it will be marked read immediately.

Geary should auto-mark messages as read only if a certain amount of the message body (i.e. not including sender, subject, etc) is visible in the window. Can you confirm if this only happens if the body of the new message is visible in the conversation viewer, and not if the message is off screen?

I agree this is pretty poor - as a workaround Geary should at least also be checking that the main window is focused before auto-marking messages, or even better only doing so in response to a user action.
