it is the same on my father's installation. Maybe it is an unfixed error with an old image since I installed 17.10 right from beta on both of our machines. I will check on my wife's machine. That one must be an upgrade from 17.04. which popped up after official launch of 17.10.

So the shortcut works but the icon is missing.
I've just tried running Ubuntu 17.10 live as guest and everything works
correctly: the detach icon is there.
It must be an issue with your installation.
This is the theme used in my Ubuntu installation:
$ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.interface gtk-theme
'Ambiance'
$ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.interface icon-theme
'ubuntu-mono-dark'
I've never had a similar problem before so I don't know what to suggest.
A common advice to start isolating the issue might be trying to use
Geary with a different system user. If that works, then it's something
related to your user settings.
