[gdm-list] X11 works, gnome doesn't - need pointers for debug information

Hello,

Here is the basic info:

Xorg -version

X.Org X Server 1.7.7
Release Date: 2010-05-04
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0
Build Operating System: FreeBSD 8.2-RELEASE amd64
Current Operating System: FreeBSD shopi.higonnet.net 8.2-RELEASE FreeBSD 8.2-RELEASE #0: Thu Feb 17 02:41:51 UTC 2011 root mason cse buffalo edu:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC amd64
Build Date: 14 May 2011 08:48:36AM

X11 seems to be working to the extent that Xorg -retro produces the expected screen.

Here are the Warning messages from Xorg (there are no error messages)

(WW) AllowEmptyInput is on, devices using drivers 'kbd', 'mouse' or 'vmmouse' will be disabled.
(WW) Disabling Mouse0
(WW) Disabling Keyboard0
(WW) VGA arbiter: cannot open kernel arbiter, no multi-card support

(WW) intel(0): DRI2 requires UXA
(WW) intel(0): drmDropMaster failed: Unknown error: -1
(WW) intel(0): drmDropMaster failed: Unknown error: -1

When I start X intending to use gnome I get this on my console:

expected keysym, got XF86TouchpadToggle: line 123 of inet
/libexec/ld-elf.so.1: /usr/local/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: unsupported file layout

I have searched for info on each of the error lines given above but what little I found struck me as rather different from my case or else I was quite unable to understand what the messages are trying to tell me and what kinds of things to do.

I do not expect a kind soul to give the answer to my problem - boom! What I am hoping for right now is where to look for more information useful to me or to others...

TIA
Bernard Higonnet
