I just wanted to clarify that there are valid security reasons for
disallowing root as well, and I was maybe a little too dismissive of
them above.

To be clear:

1) A lot of things don't work as root.  IRC, screen locking, polkit
policies, etc etc
2) It greatly increases the danger and impact of remote security holes
