Re: [gdm-list] XDMCP does not work

Giuseppe:

I try to connect my windows X server with xubuntu gdm by XDMCP but it does not work.

Could you describe more specifically how it is failing? What steps
do you do, and how do you know it fails? Are you able to run the
chooser program okay, then select a client, but it just never
actually connects, or what?

In the following the gdm DEBUG msg in the syslog.

First the gdm starting and then the XDMCP transaction

What version of GDM are you using. You can run the following command
to check if you aren't sure.

% gdmflexiserver --command=VERSION"

If you aren't using the latest version of GDM, I recommend updating.
There have been a lot of XDMCP issues reported in various older versions
of GDM. The latest version of GDM seems to work reasonably well, and I
haven't heard too many complains.

There are a number of issues that can cause XDMCP to not work properly
that tend to cause problems:

1) Some versions of GDM do not work well if the client and server
machines are not using the same version of IP. For example, if
the server is using IPv6 and the client is using IPv4, or vice
versa. Does the problem happen if both machines are using IPv4?

2) Some users have complained that XDMCP does not work, then discovered
that firewall settings were causing problems

3) If the host terminals address isn't in your /etc/hsots, GDM may
   not work well with XDMCP.

Let me know if any of these common gotchas are the cause of your
problem.

Brian
