GBM long start-up times

On my system, GDM takes a VERY long time to display the login screen -- either at initial start up or after a logout. Typically it takes 30-60 seconds. Even OpenOffice starts faster (and it's the slowest app I have by far.
Environment: 256K ram, 1Ghz P3, Gentoo
Are there things I can/should change in the configuration to affect this behaviour?
