Hello,
      We are using gdm(gdm-2.4.1.6-10) supplied with Redhat Enterprise Linux Workstation. I am running Redhat Update 4 on most machines and have had no
problem with gdm. I have done a fresh install of Update 5 on two machines with no problem. I just updated all packages on one machine with yum from Update 4
to Update 5 and gdm refuses to start up. I get an error about another X server running. I have Googled for a solution and found references to this problem
that go back a couple of years, but found no solution other than to upgrade gdm.
      I rolled gdm back to gdm-2.4.1.6-5 and it appears to work, installing gdm-2.4.1.6-10 breaks it. I have found no errors and suspect it to be a timing
problem? I am an admin and no a software person. I did turn on debug in the gdm.conf and a transcript follows this writeup. If I change the DISPLAYMANAGER
to KDE in /etc/sysconfig/desktop it works OK. I have only the one machine with this problem and do not know how many will fail as I continue to upgrade. My
trouble shooting time is limited but I would be willing to try to help solve this problem before I upgrade any others. Any help or suggestions would be
welcome.
