It looks from the log like GDM is having trouble starting up the Xserver on this
machine.  Perhaps upgrading the Xserver would help.  Checking the Xserver error
log (both system log and user log) might highlight what the problem might be.

You might also try super-using as the gdm user and trying to start the X server
by hand using the same command that GDM normally uses to make sure there isn't
some weird user environment problem with the gdm user or with the command GDM
is trying to run.

Digging into the problem a bit further, it seems like the Xserver is sending the
GDM daemon a SIGUSR1 for some reason, which is how the Xserver tells GDM that
it is having a problem starting up and wants to be shutdown.  I'd expect that
the Xserver would put something in its log explaining why it is doing this.

I'm a little confused by what version of GDM you are running.  GDM has had a
2.4.1.6 release, but I'm not sure what the -5 or -10 extension means.  Perhaps
this refers to a change in patches from the RedHat vendor?

GDM is now at release 2.8.0.2, so you might consider downloading and building
the latest version of GDM to see if the problem has been fixed since then.

      We are using gdm(gdm-2.4.1.6-10) supplied with Redhat Enterprise Linux Workstation. I am running Redhat Update 4 on most machines and have had no
problem with gdm. I have done a fresh install of Update 5 on two machines with no problem. I just updated all packages on one machine with yum from Update 4
to Update 5 and gdm refuses to start up. I get an error about another X server running. I have Googled for a solution and found references to this problem
that go back a couple of years, but found no solution other than to upgrade gdm.
      I rolled gdm back to gdm-2.4.1.6-5 and it appears to work, installing gdm-2.4.1.6-10 breaks it. I have found no errors and suspect it to be a timing
problem? I am an admin and no a software person. I did turn on debug in the gdm.conf and a transcript follows this writeup. If I change the DISPLAYMANAGER
to KDE in /etc/sysconfig/desktop it works OK. I have only the one machine with this problem and do not know how many will fail as I continue to upgrade. My
trouble shooting time is limited but I would be willing to try to help solve this problem before I upgrade any others. Any help or suggestions would be
welcome.
