remote gdm desktop not coming up

Server:  RH73, init 5, gnome by default.  at the console, no problems.
Laptop:  RH73, init 3, kde.

shut down kde on the laptop, issue:

X -query server_name

get the grey screen of death - the one where the X moves as the mouse does,
but the login screen never comes up.

i suspect something is wrong with my gdm setup on the server, which is why
i am posting to this list.

little help?

or is there a better list to subscribe to?
