Install 'gnome-2.2.'?

Hello,
so i can't find out, why 'gnome-pane' gets lost, when i add a line:
'options ide-cd dma=1' to '/etc/modules.conf' but it is, cause uncommend
it 'startx' is o.k -
May be it's (a good idea) possible to install 'Gnome-2.2' sources
manual? My system is "RedHat 8.0".
If someone knows - i would be lucky.
