"failed to notify listener" - what's it mean?

While scanning /var/log/messages for some other stuff I came across the
following message:

    May 30 13:55:24 beluga gconfd (skip-1443): Failed to notify listener 1124074378, removing: IDL:CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0

I wouldn't have been all that curious about it except it appears
approximately 20,000 times over the space of 24 hours or so.  What's it
mean?
