Thanks for taking the time to explain and for your additional research.
A lot has to do with luck, time of day, and where the person is located.
One thing I could not figure out is the comment at the top of gar.gnome.mk.
How is the default location Sweden? Is gnome.org in Sweden?
Nonetheless, you're correct. I forever tweak and even incremental
improvements in performance over many packages will make a potentially
large difference.
I'll keep experimenting and will report anything new.

You never did explain what the algorithm was for the encoding here :-).
