Campbell,

The support for the playbin gstreamer plugin is built as part of 

    ./desktop/gst-plugins-base

assuming *all* prerequisites are satisfied. 

The gstreamer plugin code will build only what it can, announcing after
configuration what it will and will not build.


What to do...

Go back and rebuild gst-plugins-base and watch the output from
configure.  If playbin is not built because of some missing dependency
you will need to add a package to your distro.
